I Preliminary Preparations

A. I met with Mr. Ken Jordan on March 21, 2012 to introduce myself and begin discussions about my internship for Instructional Technology Specialist Certificate Program. We began formulating ideas/activities for the internship. He recommended reading the Acceptable Use Policy and Educational Technology Report from their SLSD Website (slsd.org). I read these and more.

1. 815 Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) and signed the Acceptable Use Policy.docx

2. Educational Technology Report

3. 249 Bullying / Cyberbullying

4. 814 Copyright Policies

5. 815.1 Web Site Development

B. On March 28, 2012, I sent to Mr. Jordan a proposal draft based upon what we had discussed on March 21, 2012 and included activities of my own. Once he amends and approves the proposal, I will forward the proposal to Dr. Amankwatia.

  1. On April 19, Mr. Jordan sent me his updated Instructional Technology proposal.

  2. On April 25, 2012, I met with Dr. Amankwatia. We discussed Mr. Jordan's proposal and contributed some activities to share with him. We observed some emerging themes from his proposed activities: ubiquitous or 1:1 computing, staff development, assistive technology for Special Education, and help desk.

  3. The next day on April 26 Mr. Jordan, Dr. Amankwatia, and I met to finalize the proposal. Here is the finalized proposal: CE599 PDE Instructional Technician Specialist K-12 Internship

II Internship Activities

  1. On April 30, my first activity was to attend a SLSD school board meeting at 6:30 PM. It was a special budget session dealing with a tied vote over a budget increase to include 500 more computers to the 1500 already being replaced. This vote would bring the high school into a 1:1 computing environment. The discussions leading up to the vote were about the pros and cons of a 1:1 computing environment. The resulting vote was 5 to 4 in favor of the added 500 computers.

  2. On May 1, 2012, I emailed Mr. Jordan a copy of the wiki and blog guide for SLSD.

  3. The same week I completed a review on Apple’s Universal Access Features. Mr. Jordan had mentioned that SLSD would like to utilize better these features in the future. I plan to share this review with Andria Buchman, the Special Education Director when I meet her. I hope to get some guidance as to what the district needs and if I could help in any way.

  4. On May 7, 2012, I attended a second school board meeting that was a vote about refinancing of the school's debt. In addition, the board approved my internship.

  5. On Monday, May 14, 2012, I met briefly with Mr. Jordan and gave him photocopies of the four clearances needed for the internship. He introduced me to Sarah Schurkamp, the Technology Facilitator for Hopewell Elementary School. Under her direction, I spent the school day observing how technology was used in the school. This included observing assistive technology used for two vision-impaired children. Here are my observations and recommendations.

  6. During the week of May 21, I completed working on a Google Docs survey: Administrators Evaluating the Effectiveness of Technology Use: To Guide Teacher Professional Development for 2012 - 2013. I wrote a document that gives some background information for the survey.

  7. During the week of May 21, I completed researching and writing the document Implementing a Ubiquitous Computing Environment.

I created a wiki to log progress in internship @ http://wikigulbis.wikispaces.com
